Three months into the new administration, President Tsai Ing-wen attended an international press reception on Aug. 20th. She first commented on the labor dispute regarding the former freeway toll collectors, and said that it is important for the government to listen to people's complaints. She also said that changes take time, so she did not want to judge the new administration based on the first 100 day's performance only. Regarding cross-strait relations, Tsai stressed that both sides should shoulder a shared responsibility. President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Chen Chien-jen attended a press reception ahead of Journalist Day on Sep. 1st. President Tsai first expressed her views on the labor dispute involving former freeway toll collectors. She said that some people may think the resolution of the dispute just means there will be fewer street protests, but she has a different view. ==TSAI ING-WEN, R.O.C. President== Some say that this is a case of the "squeaky wheel gets the oil." However, I think the point is that these people protested with good reason, and the government tried to listen. President Tsai said the purpose of the new administration is to do what the former administration could not. She also stressed that her administration will focus on communication. When asked to comment on the new administration's performance in the past three months since she took office, President Tsai said changes will take time. ==TSAI ING-WEN, R.O.C. President== I don't wish people to judge my performance based on my first 100 days in office, so I will not do that to my cabinet members either. The transition of power in the government has changed the dynamics of cross-strait relations. A formal dialogue mechanism has not yet been established since the new president took office. In response, Tsai said both sides have to take responsibility. ==TSAI ING-WEN, R.O.C. President== In my inauguration speech I tried my best to find common ground with China. I hope China can recognize that both sides are responsible for maintaining stability and the development of cross-strait relations. We have a common responsibility to the region. President Tsai also said that regional peace remains a priority. Her administration will continue to communicate with other countries and maintain the status quo. She also said the new chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation may be announced by the end of the month.
