ACTIVISTS SUPPORT CHINESE HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYERS|中方涉抹黑維權律師 我民團出面聲援

On July the 9th last year, China launched a nationwide crackdown on human rights lawyers and advocates. Many human rights lawyers have since been sentenced to prison by the Chinese government. In Taiwan, several human rights activists are now voicing support for them in hopes of drawing greater attention to the issue. On August 3, Hu Shigen, a Chinese democracy advocate, was sentenced to over 7 years in prison. He was one of the many advocates put behind bars by the government. During the nationwide crackdown that started last year, 300 people were arrested and sentenced for subversion of state power. ==KUO CHI-JEN, Taiwan Support China Human Rights Lawyers Network founder== If you receive an education on Western democracy, human rights, and the rule of law and hope that China can embrace these things, you are considered guilty of subversion of state power. ==YANG JIANLI, Chinese Democracy Advocate== When I was at trial, they told me that my five-year-old son was under their control. Think about it: a five-year-old under their control without his parents. I was devastated. Yang Jianli, who was once arrested, spoke about his fears. According to Yang, although the government claimed that the trial was open and transparent, the trial severely violated human rights. The government also controlled public opinion. Human rights activists condemned the Chinese government and urged it to end the suppression of human rights. They called on governments around the world to demand that China overturn the verdict before the G20 Summit and urged both sides to build a consensus on human rights.
