Police attacker in custody after 2ND arrest / 砍警嫌交保引眾怒 檢二度聲押獲准

On Aug. 2, as a New Taipei City policeman handled a routine case of illegal parking, he was repeatedly stabbed by a man. The 56 year old man, surnamed Wu, was a former national bowling champion, who attacked the policeman with a cooking knife. On Aug 3, Wu was given bail of NT$300,000 which angered both police and members of the public. On the afternoon of Aug. 3, prosecutors applied to court for the second time to hold Wu in custody and this was granted. ==WU Accused== I hope Officer Zhang recovers soon. (shouts of "Police should be respected".) I was wrong, I lost control. (shouts of "Police should be respected".) I am really ashamed that I gave such a bad example to society I really regret my actions. I hope Officer Zhang recovers soon. Wu knelt to apologize and hope that the injured policeman recovered soon. On Aug 2, because he had parked illegally, within 24 hours he had been continually reported, so that he had six fines from the police, thus he stabbed the policeman. A man in a grey T-shirt ran over to start hitting Wu and several policemen in plain clothes came to the court to protest Wu's release on bail. They were all angry that Wu had been let off on NT$300,000 bail after stabbing a policeman issuing a routine parking notice. ==CHEN MING-YI Taiwan retired police officers association advisor== One officer was hit by a drunk driver and lost his leg, the driver was bailed for NT$110,000, now this, stabbed on the street and bailed for just NT$300,000. Someone who eats an endangered turtle gets held in custody, how can it be ok for him to be out on bail? What was the judge thinking? The policeman was sent to hospital and his life is not in danger, although he is still in hospital. The New Taipei City prosecutor felt that a civilized country should not tolerate attacks on its police officers and wanted to appeal, but the police gathered evidence to show that Wu was a risk for fleeing. Thus Wu was arrested for attempted murder and evading justice and the police applied to the court for the second time to hold Wu in custody. ==FENG CHENG New Taipei City Prosecutor Spokesperson== We found that after the accused became unemployed, he left home and didn't keep in touch with his family. Thus we felt that in view of the serious crime, he may flee, so the arrest warrant was made on criminal responsibility for this and since he originally obstructed the process of the law, which wasn't on the original arrest warrant, so this was also added and we applied again for him to be taken into custody. Wu's son said that his father had got into an argument with the policeman and was agitated, but he bitterly regretted his actions and wanted to apologize personally to the policeman.
