Tourists Sit on Railway Tracks, Alishan Office Says Persuasion First
The cherry blossoms in Alishan are in full bloom recently. However, some tourists were videotaping themselves while sitting on the train tracks, which is a violation of the Railway Act. Officials say that anyone who intrudes on the railway line can be fined NT$10,000 to NT$50,000.
Ten tourists sat on the railroad tracks of the Alishan Forestry Railway, posing like they are rowing a dragon boat.
Chou Heng-kai, Deputy Director, Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office: “This video was found on the morning of Feb. 18. It was filmed at Shenmu Station. The tourists sitting on the tracks have violated Article 57 of the Railway Act.”
According to the Railway Act, pedestrians and vehicles are not allowed to intrude on railway routes, tunnels, and other places. Violators can be fined NT$10,000 to NT$50,000 in accordance with the law. If railway safety is affected, the penalty can be increased up to NT$500,000. The Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office also stated that first-time offenders will be persuaded first.
Chou Heng-kai, Deputy Director, Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office: “After one of our colleagues went to persuade the tourists to stop, they immediately cooperated and left. Therefore, our office did not call the police to carry out the punishment.”
Due to the cherry blossoms blooming in Alishan recently, there is an endless stream of tourists. The public questioned whether the forest railway office is short on staff and whether the area lacked warning signs. The forest rail office clarified that there are warning signs on the tourist lines around Shenmu Station. It also reminds people who visit the surrounding areas of Alishan Forest Railway to abide by relevant regulations to avoid violating the law.
