Taiwan reported 38,785 new domestic cases of COVID-19 on Sept. 25, a week-on-week decrease of 1.4 percent, and 34 deaths. In addition, there were four severe pediatric cases all with MIS-C.
Japan will reopen to independent travelers on Oct. 11 with a negative 72-hour PCR test or proof of three vaccinations. Those in Taiwan that chose to get Medigen are out of luck and will have to shell out at least NT$3,500 to get a PCR test as Japan does not recognize Medigen. Health and Welfare Minister Hsueh Jui-yuan says Japan is definitely not targeting Medigen and other countries are lifting border controls without requiring proof of vaccination.
Hsueh Jui-yuan, Health and Welfare Minister: “We have collected information on 71 main countries around the world and of this number, 49 do not require so-called vaccine certificates to enter. So, this should gradually become a trend.”
Eleven municipalities began administering second-generation Moderna vaccines on the 24th, with people over 65 getting priority and 4,469 people getting vaccinated on the first day.
Citizen: “BA.4 and BA.5 are highly infectious, and the only one that gets even close is the BA.1 second-generation vaccine.”
Citizen: “(You waited a year before getting boosted. Is it because you have travel plans?) No, it's for work. Many companies aren't hiring people that haven't been boosted.”
Taiwan reported 38,785 new domestic cases of COVID-19 on the 25th, a week-on-week decrease of 1.4 percent and 34 deaths. New Taipei City had the highest number of new cases among all municipalities with 8,016 new cases. Taiwan also reported four new severe pediatric cases between the ages of one and 12, all with MIS-C. The 12-year-old had had two shots.
Chuang Jen-hsiang, Spokesperson, Central Epidemic Command Center: “(The boy) was diagnosed with MIS-C and acute hepatitis at the hospital. He is currently receiving immunoglobulin treatment.”
The head of the Central Epidemic Command Center, Victor Wang, says the case count has only fallen slightly in the past week and this could indicate another plateau. Wang says several more days of observation are needed to see if the case count is truly trending downwards.
