The Taipei Film Festival kicked off on June 25. It is the only large-scale and physical film festival that has been held since COVID-19 broke out. The opening film was "The Silent Forest."
2020 Taipei Film Festival opening film "The Silent Forest" is about a "game" that takes place at a school for the hearing-impaired. This "game" holds many secrets. The story is adapted from real events involving sexual assault at a special education school. Director Ko Chen-nien wants audiences to try to relate to the protagonists in the movie and to understand their feelings of powerlessness and terror.
What we wanted to express was trying to understand these children. For example, what they need is more empathy from us and to be viewed calmly. I hope everyone who watches the film will be able to better understand and acknowledge these people.
The lead actors spent two to three months learning sign language for this film.
We also had to use more lively facial expressions and movements. You really have to understand what it's like to be deaf to play a deaf person.
He put in a lot of effort for this film and play the role of a deaf child. He also made many deaf friends. You can't just only learn sign language if you want to really understand them.
"The Silent Forest" director Ko Chen-nien is a new director. The subject matter she chose is very incisive. I also believe she sustained a lot of pressure to create this film. We watched the film after it was completed and thought it was very accurate and well-executed, without the haste of new directors. It was very steady.
"The Silent Forest" is scheduled to premiere in the fall. On June 26, the festival screened "The Painting of Evil," which stars hearing-impaired actor Tung Ming-hsiang. He plays the role of a struggling painter. His co-star is River Huang, a former Best Actor winner at the Taipei Film Festival. The festival is the only large-scale, physical film festival to be held since the outbreak of COVID-19. Festival chairperson Li Ping-pin says disease prevention measures are being taken so that the world can see Taiwan's films.
