Casualties have raised safety concerns for candidates as the elections are just less than three months away. Some fear that drones can be used as a lethal weapon after a tourist in Kenting was accidentally hit and killed by an unpowered model glider. Interior Minister Hsu Kuo-yung says drones are a concern and necessary precautions have been put in place, including radio frequency jamming.
A tourist was recently killed by an unpowered glider at Kenting National Park. With the presidential election around the corner, there are concerns about drones being a security issue.
If they are interfering with the presidential elections, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and creating a security issue -- is that included? We have jammers and other equipment. This is really not allowed. We will of course use relevant methods to bring them down.
If (drones) are being used to film campaign rallies, (drone owners) have to contact us. For example, you are a TV station or a newspaper. You have to contact us ahead of time. After that, we will deal with relevant frequencies.
Interior Minister Hsu Kuo-yung says the National Security Bureau and National Police Agency have both purchased jammers to prevent aerial attacks and all drones with the exception of those registered to the media will be banned at campaign rallies. Hsu was also asked about the impact on police morale after a court awarded compensation to Sunflower Movement protestors.
It will have no impact whatsoever on police morale. Our police colleagues will not slack off on their responsibility to maintain order because of one isolated case. So, our police colleagues will definitely still do everything in their power to maintain social order and security. This includes overall security in the upcoming presidential election and legislative elections.
A number of legislative candidates in Taipei and Changhua have received threats in recent days, while Kuomintang presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu has had eggs thrown at him. Hsu says relevant agencies and local police will step up security.
