To cultivate an exercise habit in students, a teacher at Yunlin Junior High School is encouraging students to use the 10 minutes after any of their classes to run around the track with him every day. The program is now in its 90th day. The teacher hopes the activity will strengthen students physically, cultivate determination and teach them the outlook of being serious about anything.
At 10 a.m., students get out of class and head to the track. The teacher blows a whistle and the students start running laps. The teacher runs alongside them and offers words of encouragement. Many of the students have been running 10 minutes every school day since last semester.
It's actually not that bad because it's like practice. It's just running with the teacher for 10 minutes after class.
The students say it's hard to keep the streak going because they need the break between classes to relax or catch up with friends. Meanwhile, the teacher says the optional run gets students into the habit of exercising and teaches them to have determination in the face of adversity.
You have to move forward step by step to get to your goal. There's no turning back. As long as you have determination, the finish line will be in front of you. I think students benefit from having this attitude.
The teacher says students sign in when they run so there's a log of how long each student has been participating. He hopes the program, which is going into its fourth month, can not only improve students' physical condition but also teach them the value of hard work.
