The volunteers are busy preparing lunch for the elderly at this Class-C long term care center in Miaoli County. However, the center's location near a columbarium makes many elderly residents uncomfortable. Over 10 elderly residents have stopped visiting the center.
(An elderly member in our family) didn't feel well after the visit, so he decided not to visit any further. If the center was located in other places, such as near the water company, this probably wouldn't have happened.
The long term care center which is in the immediate proximity of cremation urns makes many elderly residents feel uneasy about visiting. Some therefore decide not to go.
Local official Liu Hung-chun said that there was much difficulty when looking for a location for a long term care center, and that they chose the location next to the columbarium because its owner was willing to provide a warehouse for free. However, local officials have begun to look for new locations due to concerns from local elderly.
When we talked about an appropriate location for the long term care center, we decided the pick an old office of the local water company.
The head of local township said that, despite the local water company's willingness to rent out one of their offices, a fund of NT$2 million is still needed to renovate the area. The official has called on the central government to help with the funding.
