The weather has been stable recently, and oversupply has sent cabbage prices plummeting. Some farmers in Yunlin came up with a new idea to let consumers pick their own cabbages, charging only NT$10 for each cabbage. They say it's a win-win solution as farmers save up on labor cost and transportation fees and people get to enjoy the fun of cabbage picking. But not all the farmers agree with this strategy. Many people brought their own big bags to this Chinese cabbage farm field in Yunlin County's Yuanchang Township. Due to stable weather, the harvest of Chinese cabbages has a supply over demand. Farmer was selling for a cheap price at NT$10 each. ==MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC== To me, there is no such low price at markets. But you need to know how to process after picking. If you don't know how, it will be worthless if you buy a lot of them. ==MR. TSAI Yunlin farmer== My thought is, all those are eatable. If you had them plowed away, it would be a real waste. Even I offer those free to self-pickers, I don't mind at all. Not only the Chinese cabbages, the cabbage harvest also faces with oversupply. Another farmer does not agree with the low-price sale; he believes a safe high-quality cabbage requires efforts and learning, the cost should not be low. ==LIN JIA-HSI, Yunlin farmer== A cabbage for NT$30. If you buy it, I will donate NT$15 to Yunlin County Social Welfare Care Association for kids to have dinners. I don't want to make consumers thinking that those cabbages are cheap agricultural produce. This is our belief. Farmer Lin Jia-hsing said, he paid his efforts in growing cabbages; his earnings support family living and distributors, and for expenditures on transportation and paper boxes. Therefore he believes the low-price tactics during the oversupply period would be harmful to Taiwan's agriculture.
