After the confirmation that diplomatic relations between the ROC and Sao Tome and Principe concluded, attention has turned to collateral fallout. Currently there are 68 Sao Tome students in Taiwan, of which over half are on scholarships from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These include the daughter of Sao Tome's incumbent President. To consolidate international ties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offers scholarships to subsidize students from diplomatic allies to study in Taiwan. Ministry of Education statistics show that over the past five years, over fifty students a year from Sao Tome come to Taiwan. This year there are 68 studying in National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan Technology University and other institutions. Over half of these are on MOFA scholarships. ==HOU CHING-SHAN Dep. Minister, Foreign Affairs and TSAI SHE-YING DPP legislator== There are currently 42 Sao Tome students in Taiwan will they continue to get these two scholarships? Of course, we have to review that When the parent acts like this to us, do we still give scholarships to their children? We will review this Hou pointed out that since diplomatic relations were broken off, the scholarships would not continue until graduation. Sao Tome students were upset when they heard about the break in diplomatic relations. ==LIU KUO-WEI Ming Chuan University International Education and Div. Exchange== They are in the middle of their courses, and about to graduate, this morning we asked teachers to reassure the students. We hope that the students are not affected by political interference. Looking at the MOFA information on scholarships for foreign students they are offered NT$25,000 a month. This year there are 34 students who were awarded this scholarship , that is NT$850,000 a month from the MOFA for these students. This does not include return air tickets. There are three Sao Tome students who are on ROC International Cooperation and Development Fund scholarships, who get NT$12,000 a month and one of these is the daughter of the country's president. The president's son has also previously held a scholarship to the Academia Sinica and took a masters degree at NTU. The break in relations affects students as well as the health professionals who have worked in Sao Tome for six years and will be recalled. There are three doctors and two nurses from Taipei Medical University there, who regret the break.
