Hsu Shu-ching competed in the 53 kilogram weightlifting category and won gold in a sensational turn of events. She successfully completed snatch of 100 kilograms and then clean and jerk of 112 kilograms, making a total of 212 kilograms. It is the second time she has won Olympic gold, the first being in London's 2012 Olympics. At 2:30 am Taiwan time the 53 kilogram women's weightlifting competition started in Rio. Hsu Shu-ching outmaneuvered the Chinese favorite Li Yajun, who failed to register a clean and jerk. Hsu succeeded in clean and jerk of 100 kilograms and then 112 kilograms, making a total of 212 kilograms. Hsu started the first round of three attempts with a conservative 92 kilograms, then 96 kilograms and on the third attempt went to 100 kilograms. China's Li had set a new Olympic record in the snatch when she raised 101kg above her head on her second lift. Li then attempted to set a new world record but dropped the 104 kilogram barbell. She went into the clean and jerk only 1kg ahead of Hsu, but Hsu won through tactics. Hsu lifted 112kg and then failed to haul 126kg. However, Li failed on her three attempts at the clean and jerk, first at 123kg then twice on 126kg. This meant Hsu was left in first place with an attempt to spare, which she declined to use, finishing with 12 kg ahead of Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines and 13 kilograms ahead of Yoon Jin-Hee of South Korea. Hsu took the gold for Taiwan, the second time she has won Olympic gold. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
