Taiwanese Naoki Prize winner shares experience / 直木賞台籍作家 返台談創作經歷

Taiwan-born novelist Higashiyama Akira was named winner of the biannual Japanese literary award Naoki Prize, he's the third Taiwanese writer to take the honor in its 80 year history. Last week, he held a press conference in Taiwan, for the Mandarin version of his novel "Ryu". Also during his visit, he met up with president Tsai Ying-wen, shared their thoughts on multinational community. ==HAGASHIYAMA AKIRA, Naoki Prize winner== Hello everyone, my name is Higashiyama Akira and I can speak Mandarin. Wang Chen-hsu, as known as Higashiyama Akira, was named the winner of the biannual Japanese Naoki Prize. He was hailed by the jury as one of the best winning titles in the last 20 years. ==HAGASHIYAMA AKIRA, Naoki Prize winner== At first I just wanted to write a young adult novel. Then I decided to set the background during 1975 in Taipei. So I have to describe the atmosphere during that time. Maybe because I was in Taipei during that period of time, thus I have a stronger impression of Taipei during that era. Set in 1970s Taiwan, his novel "Ryu" follows the young protagonist as he drifts to Japan and then mainland China tracing the secret behind his grandfather's murder and discovering his own family roots. Hagashiyama himself, moved to Japan at 5 with his family, because of that, he was able to capture the essence of identity crisis in his novels based on his real life experiences. ==HAGASHIYAMA AKIRA, Naoki Prize winner== For popular literature, aside from just conveying something, it also combines amusement. I guess in a way it can be considered as a novel for people's entertainment. ==HSIAO YEH, novelist== In 2016, this book is like a gift from heaven. Because it allows us to re-evaluate history, with a new set of eyes. It's more amusing, almost like going through the history with a roller coaster. It also contains the happiness of detective-novels. Higashiyama Akira is the third Taiwanese writer to win the Naoki Prize. Previous winners from Taiwan were Qiu Yong-han in 1995, and Chen Shun-chen in 1968. On June 17th, he met with president Tsai Ing-wen, they shared thoughts on multicultural community, and also experiences as cat owners.
