Flu season is approaching, and free flu shots start on Oct. 15. The Centers for Disease Control has purchased six million shots this year. Although the start date of the free flu shots is half a month later than previous years, the CDC says it is not peak flu season yet and shots offer protection for up to one year after vaccination. Also, people who are allergic to eggs qualify for the free shots this year.

It says people are protected within two weeks of getting the shot and the shots last up to one year. In addition, people with egg allergies are eligible for the program this year.
The World Health Organization recommended changes to two of the three shots from last year. The production process was a bit slower this year, so supply was affected. Most people get 70 to 90 percent protection with the shot and as high as 60 to 80 percent protection against severe complications or death.
Winter to spring is not only peak flu season, but peak invasive pneumococcal disease season as well. The CDC says everyone over the age of 75 that has not gotten the Pneumovax 23 vaccine can get it administered to their right arm during the same flu shot visit to their doctor.
