Typhoon Kong-rey has been upgraded to a super typhoon and may come closest to Taiwan on Oct. 4th and 5th. When it might bring heavy rain and wind to northern and eastern Taiwan. However, the Central Weather Bureau emphasized its path is still uncertain, but if it remains on a westerly path, Taiwan could take a direct hit from the super typhoon and the public should take necessary precautions.
Typhoon Kong-rey, the 25th storm to form over the Pacific Ocean this year, strengthened into a severe typhoon on Oct. 1. It is presently moving in a northwesterly direction. The Central Weather Bureau forecasts Typhoon Kong-rey will be closest to Taiwan on Oct. 4 and 5, and northern and eastern Taiwan will experience heavy rain. However, this will depend on the intensity of Pacific high-pressure systems starting Oct. 3, which will give a clearer picture of the typhoon's path.
It is forecast to be closest to Taiwan between Thursday and Friday. The northern and northeastern regions may experience heavy rain. If the path of this typhoon brings it closer, then there may be heavy rain or torrential rain.
The Central Weather Bureau has not ruled out the possibility of issuing a sea warning on Oct. 4. There are differing opinions between international forecasters as to the typhoon's path after Oct. 3. China's forecast has the typhoon approaching closest to Taiwan, while the United States military has forecasted the typhoon will turn towards the north after Oct. 3, reducing its impact on Taiwan. Japan and Taiwan's weather agencies have similar forecasts, and indicate the storm wind circle could sweep across the northeast region.
Based on the Central Weather Bureau's current path forecast, its storm wind circle may sweep across the north. However, there is room for some changes, so we have to wait and see the changes over the next several days to determine whether it will turn north earlier than expected or directly head west.
In related news, the northeast monsoon has brought foreign pollutants to Taiwan. Western Taiwan is currently suffering from a high ozone concentration, and the air quality is poor. The orange alert level is expected to flash in northern and central Taiwan, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung County on Oct. 3. This means the air will be unhealthy for sensitive groups and the public is reminded to wear face masks while outdoors or avoid venturing outdoors.
