Former Hualien County Magistrate Fu Kun-chi was accused of insider trading in 2003 while he was a legislator. The case has dragged on for 14 years. On Sept. 13, the Taichung High Court dismissed the appeal and maintained the lower court's sentence of eight months in prison. On the same day, Fu held a press conference with his wife, Hsu Chen-wei, who is representing the Kuomintang in the Hualien County magistrate election. Fu condemned the Democratic Progressive Party for its political persecution.
Hundreds of local residents crowded into Hualien County Hall on the morning of the 13th to show their support for former Magistrate Fu Kun-chi. Along with Fu, they held hands and protested the Democratic Progressive Party's political persecution of Fu.
At this critical juncture, it's no coincidence this prison sentence suddenly came down. The Democratic Progressive Party has been busy rumormongering for years now in a transparent attempt to seize the Hualien County Government and the entire county. It is deplorable that they would resort to these tactics.
Fu's wife, Hsu Chen-wei, is the Kuomintang candidate for Hualien County magistrate. Hsu called on voters to take a close look at how the state apparatus is functioning.
We are worried about our nation; deeply worried. We know everyone can see what is happening. We must stand together to save Taiwan.
In response to the Fus' condemnations, the DPP's Hualien County magistrate candidate, Liuh Siao-mei, said the court ruling should have come down 14 years ago. Liuh also said she is not worried about how the ruling would affect the election in Hualien, which has always been a pan-blue stronghold.
I think a state apparatus cannot create this case out of thin air. Fu Kun-chi's 14-year-old legal case is not his only one. All of these legal cases have dragged on for far too long.
Fu has been banned from traveling abroad and received his dismissal notice from the Ministry of the Interior on the 13th. He says a new chapter of his life will start in eight months and called on voters to support his wife.
