Wu Yin-ning, the head manager of the Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation, was recently criticized for buying low price produce with corporate fund and sending them to local welfare organizations. The corporation has since drawn up a standard operating procedure to legally buy and give away unsold produce. The decision was well received among social welfare groups.
Wu Yin-ning, the head manager of the Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation, was recently criticized for buying low price produce with corporate fund and sending them to local welfare organizations. Wu herself maintained that her handling of the matter is correct and that she has put an official procedure in place on buying produce for welfare groups.
The procedure involves buying low price produce through local food banks and sending them to welfare organizations. The corporation will be buying the produce at the closed-market price of the given day before sending them out.
We will hold discussion with Taipei City's Department of Social Welfare as well as the government's food bank, and local welfare organizations and sign a memorandum of understanding with them. Those who receive the produce will also take care of the subsequent procedures.
Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je also expressed approval for the latest development.
I have told the Department of Social Welfare to put this standard operating procedure in writing. That way, there won't be any dispute over the proper way to handle the matter in the future.
There are a lot of people in our organization who are in need of food. If (the government) could help bring some food over, that is indeed great. This will greatly reduce our cost of buying food elsewhere.
Most social welfare organizations believe that sending produce to those in need is a positive move. They also suggested that the government bring them fresh produce, instead of low price produce, if possible.
