To the surprise of the public, the only Chinese Taipei weightlifter to win two Olympic gold medals, Hsu Shu-ching, announced on Facebook that she is pulling out of this year's Asian Games due to accumulated injuries and also announced an end to her competitive career. However, she said she won't give up weightlifting entirely and would become a coach in the future.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Hsu Shu-ching has announced her retirement from competitive weightlifting.

Her coach, Tsai Wen-yi, said the decision was not an easy one. According to Tsai, Hsu first decided to withdraw from this year's Asian Games due to her slow recovery from an injury sustained last year. She later decided to retire from competition.

Of course she's down in the dumps. It's hard to accept.

The 27-year-old Hsu ruptured two ligaments in her elbow during last year's World Weightlifting Championships. She underwent surgery knowing it would take at least one year of rehab to return to form. This didn't leave her enough time to train for this year's Asian Games or World Weightlifting Championships. The latter is an Olympic qualifier for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

We have a medical team. The medical team, coach and athlete work together to make decisions and plans on the athlete's future direction.

Hsu is from Yunlin County's Lunbei Township. Her parents say she is dealing with both major and minor injuries and they respect her decision. Many had been anticipating her return at the Asian Games this year and were surprised by her decision to retire at the peak of her career. Hsu says she is not leaving the sport behind just yet and plans to transition into coaching to help cultivate the next generation of weightlifters in Taiwan.
