Education Minister Wu Maw-kuen was bombarded with questions in the legislature regarding the Taiwan University president controversy. He said he was willing to resign if his trip to China back in 2015 was determined illegal. Some legislators were also concerned over the issue that some high school principals were questioned by investigators for having written recommendation letters for students wishing to study in China, Mr. Wu said he respects the judicial process.

Kuomintang legislators shout slogans prior to the start of the Education and Culture Committee's meeting on May 24. They called for the resignation of Education Minister Wu Maw-kuen.

What kind of society have we become? The Investigation Bureau is hauling in principals who write recommendation letters for Chinese universities for questioning.

The meeting began at 9 a.m. Wu was surrounded by the media and lawmakers as soon as he appeared. He was bombarded with questions about the Taipei District Prosecutors Office summoning members of National Taiwan University's presidential selection committee for questioning, as well as the Control Yuan and Investigation Bureau questioning high school principals who had written letters of recommendation for students seeking to study in China.

The Taipei District Prosecutors Office issued a very clear statement about why they did this (summon NTU presidential selection committee members for questioning). I respect the judicial process. We will go and try to learn more (about the high school principals issue). (Will you oppose it?)

The committee was scheduled to examine a draft bill on private junior college transitions and the Ministry of Education and Sports Administration's budget freezes. However, the focus of the meeting remained on the two issues that the education minister was questioned about.

The selection committee told you that it followed procedures from start to finish, and it was the Ministry of Education that refused to admit to making a mistake. No, the Ministry of Education said we looked at all the evidence. So is it what you and the Ministry of Education said? If you hadn't applied for Hangzhou (in 2005), are you going to resign? That depends on if the premier wants me to resign.

Kuomintang Legislator Ko Chih-en was referring to an incident in 2005. At that time, Wu was National Science Council minister, and he applied for permission to attend an international science council meeting in Suzhou. However, he did not apply for permission to attend the "High-tech Summit Forum" in Hangzhou but used that trip to attend. Ko asked him if he was willing to resign if it is determined that he broke the law.
