There is still much controversy over the Ministry of Education's decision to nullify Kuan Chung-ming's appointment as National Taiwan University president. Former NTU President Sun Chen says Education Minister Wu Maw-kuen should apologize and resign. He said the Executive Yuan should also apologize to society.
Eighty-three-year-old former National Taiwan University President Sun Chen and the former presidents of Soochow University and Huafan University call for the resignation of Education Minister Wu Maw-kuen. The educators also said Wu needs to apologize for his politically motivated decision to nullify the appointment of NTU President-elect Kuan Chung-ming.
Apart from Minister Wu Maw-kuen resigning and apologizing, the Executive Yuan also needs to apologize to the public. This has not been resolved. From a legal and political perspective, this case could go on forever.
Sun says the government intentionally shrouded Kuan in political controversies, including an adjunct teaching position he had in China and his independent seat on the board of Taiwan Mobile. The government then tried and found him guilty without any evidence. Former Huafan University President Jimmy Jue called the entire case a farce and said the Democratic Progressive Party's abuse of law and power has been exposed for the world to see. In response, Premier William Lai said people need to take responsibility for themselves.
The government would never dare to harm the freedom of universities. At the same time, society also can't accept any one person using "freedom of universities" as a shield and dodging personal responsibility by hiding behind it.
The Ministry of Education claims that Kuan's independent seat on the Taiwan Mobile board, audit committee and wage committee violates the law. According to the ministry, it rejected Kuan's appointment because the president of NTU needs to be held to a higher standard. Over the past three months, the simple appointment of a university president has blown up into a political firestorm. NTU's selection committee is applying for administrative relief, which means the storm is not quite over yet.
