According to Tourism Bureau statistics, new hotels have been opening in Taiwan at a rate of one every 1.5 days in the past two years.

Hotels have a longer development process. We have discovered that in recent years, (hotel operators) feel like this is a good area for investment. So, we have seen both the number of hotels and number of rooms increasing.

There were 3,529 registered hotels in Taiwan in 2008. This number fell to 3,199 the following year and 3,150 in 2010 due to the global financial crisis. As Chinese tourists began flocking to Taiwan, the number of hotels grew 3.41 percent in 2011 to 3,422 and to 3,702 in 2012. Although the Chinese tourist market has stagnated, the number of new hotels still increased 7.48 percent last year. Hotel operators are worried the domestic market is oversaturated.

In general, the impact of Chinese tourists no longer coming to Taiwan is around NT$2,000 per night (per room). Occupancy rates are around 20-30 percent now with 1.5 million fewer Chinese tourists. Hotels are finding it hard to survive.

Experts expect the number of new guesthouses and hotels to continue growing at a rate of 10 percent per year until 2020 even though foreign tourists are not coming to Taiwan and Taiwanese people are not traveling as much domestically. This may result in price wars where everyone loses.
