The Cake Towel Café in Yunlin County is closing its doors due to poor sales. The shop owner said that the dropping number of Chinese tourists means their income can't cover the shop's operating costs.
A delicate towel can be folded into the shape of a book. The Cake Towel Café in Yunlin County's Huwei Township features many cultural goods such as a variety of towels in addition to serving coffee. However, the shop is about to close its doors.
Fellow towel industry professionals funded the café and it was really popular when it first opened. However, the market changed rapidly in recent years. The dwindling number of Chinese tourists has affected that market, as well as many tourism industry professionals.
Industry professionals said that 10 local towel sellers collectively founded the café five years ago. The shop reported a revenue of around NT$ 30 million in the first year. However, as the number of Chinese tourists dropped by 20 percent per year, the café could no longer turn a profit. The shop owner will suspend the shop's operations indefinitely after the Tomb Sweeping Festival.
We have contacted the shop's owners in order to learn about the current status of their café and to see whether they have made any future plans. We are still in the process of learning about their operations. We'll see if the public sector is able to provide some help.
The Yunlin County government said that 80% of the towels made in Taiwan are from Huwei Township. In order to protect the towel industry, the government imposed an anti-dumping tax against Chinese-made towels three different times. The government said that they will speak with shop owners of the Cake Towel Café to provide assistance.
