HEAVY THUNDERSTORM IN CHIAYI LEADS TO DROWNING|午後降暴雨 嘉義一男子騎車開水門溺斃

Recently there have been afternoon thunderstorms across Taiwan. This violent weather will become more frequent due to global warming. On Saturday afternoon, in Chiayi, a thunderstorm caused flooding and a manager from the local Water Resources Association worried about the high water levels, rode his bike in the rain to open irrigation gates, but unfortunately drowned. On July 8, there were heavy thunderstorms in Chaiyi's Dalin Township. The Sanjiaoli area flooded and a 69-year-old water resources association manager surnamed Jiang went to open irrigation gates. However, he failed to return home. Emergency services were notified and they found his body one kilometer away from the irrigation gates. ==POLICE OFFICER== We looked for him near the large drainage ditches, then we found him near there. The man had signs of head injuries, so police will investigate further. The flooding was swift and strong leaving many local residents with flooded homes. They were still trying to clear up as the night wore on. ==RESIDENT== It was flooded up to here. Flooded inside? Yes, it flooded inside. Up to here. ==RESIDENT== The drainage ditch there, did not drain water away, the ditch is quite high, so where would it drain to? Weather analysts say global warming will increase extreme weather incidents. In the future, there will be more frequent storms which will not necessarily be in the afternoon, but in the evenings too. The Central Weather Bureau reminds the public that global warming will mean that summer becomes longer, with more hot and rainy weather patterns. The public should pay attention to weather warnings, to try and prevent disasters due to heavy rain.
