PUBLIC PROTEST GREENPEACE TO PUT TAIWAN AS A PART OF CHINA ON MAP|

International environmental group Greenpeace Taiwan attracted criticism from netizens and its supporters after it was found to have included Taiwan as part of China in a map of an analysis report. On July 7, Greenpeace made a statement to clarify the situation, saying that it was an error and that Greenpeace has no political stance. The controversial map has been taken down from its official website. An analysis report on China's consumption of coal and water resources was published on international environmental group Greenpeace's website. However, taking a closer look at the map of the report, one will find that Taiwan was shown as a part of China. On Jul.7, Taiwan Association for Human Rights director Chiu Yu-bin said on Facebook that Taiwanese people donate over NT$100 million to Greenpeace International every year, and yet it went so far as to include Taiwan in China. Chiu therefore called on the environmental group's supporters to donate their money to local environmental groups instead. ==CHIU YU-BIN Taiwan Association for Human Rights director== I don't think most Taiwanese people will agree that Taiwan is a part of China. Non-governmental organizations are civil groups. They should be more careful in dealing with such issue, and have a better understanding of it. The controversy over the map sparked outrage and phone lines of Greenpeace's Taiwan office were paralyzed. Supporters of Greenpeace also protested at Greenpeace Taiwan's Facebook page, saying that they will stop making donations to Greenpeace, if it cannot respect Taiwanese people. Later in the day, Greenpeace issued a statement to apologize, and said that the map was a mistake. The map has been taken down from the website. ==LEE CHIH-AN Greenpeace Taiwan specialist == We made a mistake while making the report. Greenpeace feels deeply sorry about the disturbance it caused. Greenpeace emphasized that it has no political stance, and it pays much effort to issues such as Taiwan's deep-sea fishery and renewable energy. Greenpeace also said that this was not the first time that Taiwan is included in China in its maps, because its publications of Greenpeace Beijing are required to follow China's Regulation on Map Management. Greenpeace promised to be more careful in dealing with such issue in the future. TRANSLATED BY ARIEL HSIEH
