Zhou Hongxu who in the past had come to Taiwan to study, in February this year used investment management as a reason to enter Taiwan again. However, he was suspected of being a spy, and arrested in March, and held in custody incommunicado. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office has now decided that the case against him is clear and yesterday prosecuted in for violation of the national security law.
The twenty nine year old Liaoning resident had previously come to Taiwan to study for a master's degree. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office said that he had made solo contact with civil servants many times, trying to obtain confidential information. He had also entertained officials to travel, and asked them to provide confidential information. Zhou denied any crime when arrested, and has been in custody for four months. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office will prosecute him for violation of Taiwan's National Security Act. At its heaviest the sentence is 5 years imprisonment, and a fine of NT$1 million. However, he latterly confessed to the crime, so the prosecution asked the court to reduce its punishment.
