EU anti-trust regulators are slapping Google with a hefty 2.4 billion euro fine. The European Commission says Google unfairly deprives users of choice by abusing its market dominance and giving preference to its own shopping service. The search engine giant vows to appeal. Web search engine Google has been investigated and fined since 2010, this time is Google Shopping. The European Commission found that Google systematically placed its own shopping services and products in prominent places in web searches, and demoted rivals' products to non-prominent corners. The Commission said that Google has 90 days to make an improvement plan over favoring its own shopping services or face another penalty. ==MARGRETHE VESTAGER Commissioner, European Competition== What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules. It has denied other companies the chance to compete on the merits and to innovate and, most importantly, it has denied European consumers the benefits of competition, genuine choice and innovation. EU antitrust regulators fined Google a record high of 2.42 billion euro, which exceeds 1.6 billion euro fine against Intel in 2009. If Google failed to comply the mandate, Google may face up to 5% daily global turnover as an additional penalty. Google expressed its disagreement with the decision made by EU antitrust regulators and Google is considering an appeal. According to CNN news reports, the European Union in recent years has strengthened its investigations on American enterprises such as Apple, Facebook and Nike. But European anti-trust regulators denied such allegation.
