The pension reform bill for teachers at public schools passed its second reading at the legislature yesterday. After much wrangling, the DPP was able to use its advantage in numbers to make sure that the age for pension eligibility is lowered to 58. Several teachers groups vow to keep on protesting. As debate began on a pension reform bill targeting teachers, protests erupted outside of the Legislative Yuan for the DPP's decision to set the age for pension eligibility at 58. The DPP said that this was a compromise reached with the National Federation of Teachers' Unions. But now we have finally convinced the DPP caucus to accept our suggestion to lower it by two years. I think we've done our best already. The KMT once again took turns at the podium prolonging the debate in an attempt to stall the bill. However, the DPP ultimately used its numbers advantage to vote to end debate, signifying that the bill has passed the second reading. Compromise is a more moderate path, a solution that neither side is completely satisfied with but finds acceptable. The legislature also completed a second reading on a provision that will calculate pensions for teachers based on the average salary of the final 15 years of their career, instead of the last month, as well as a provision to sunset the 18% special savings interest rate for teachers in two years.
