Casualties and damage were reported from around Taiwan as torrential rain battered the island early June. Landslide and flooding washed away 6 houses in Nantou's Shemu Village. Premier Lin Chuan visited the village yesterday and met with local residents to discuss future reconstruction and relocation. Premier Lin Chuan visited Shenmu Village in Nantou County and inspected disasters caused by previous torrential rains. As to the broken Lung Hua Bridge, Premier Lin instructed Water Resources Agency to check with previous maintenance records and further exam the bridge foundation and location. Lin urges staff to complete the project with confidence without worrying the bridge may be terminated again. ==LIN CHUAN Premier== Some are structural and long-term problems, and for those that are feasible, let's discuss together. I hope, after completion, protection and living convenience to local residents must be better than in the past. This is what I called meaningful, rebuilding is not only to restore things back to what they were. ==LIN MING-CHEN Nantou County Magistrate== The main point is the funds to rebuild after the disaster. I hope the central government can subsidize us in time. Allowing us to fix them fast, that is the most important. Torrential rains in early June caused six houses being washed away, while two house foundations were exposed. More than ten villagers are settled at a temporary shelter. The issue of relocation is again being raised up for discussion. ==SHENMU VILLAGER== We have lived here since my grandfather's generation. We have been planting vegetables here; we make our living here. If you tell us to leave here and go somewhere, we don't have any particular skill, how do we survive? Premier Lin said, relocation place must go through safety assessment for a long-term living while at the same time fulfill needs of local residents for living, education and employment. The majority of villagers, however, do not want to relocate and many problems remain unsolved. TRANSLATED BY: ANTHONY LIN
