English has become the modern lingua franca, and across the world, having good English skills does give you an advantage in the job market. In fact, in Taiwan, more than 60% of businesses say English is a factor when they consider who to hire. Which is probably why many universities in Taiwan have mandated that students prove their English skills before they can graduate, by taking part in standardized exams. If your scores are too low, you'll need to take remedial English lessons. But many are now questioning if this is necessary, and some of have argued for the abolishment for such a test-based practice.
Students at recruitment fairs are eager to find good jobs after they graduate. Half of recruiting enterprises consider English ability as a basic requirement.

64.8 percent of enterprises responded that they use our standard for English testing as a standard for recruiting new staff. TOEIC is a global standard used by many companies worldwide. Each year, there are 7 million students worldwide who take the test
According to statistics, over 60 percent of enterprises consider English ability when recruiting staff and 40 percent look at TOEIC results. Enterprises and industry require different TOEIC levels. The average range is around 532 points. Up to now, the average TOEIC score for Taiwan university graduates is 501 points. There is quite a lot of focus on the debate about getting rid of the English threshold for university graduation. Some support this, others worry that students will lose their ability to study. Analysts think that the purpose of study should be clarified then it would be easier to measure this appropriately.

When they graduate you should still have some kind of test to evaluate their English ability. As to what sort of English they should study and to what level, you can't just take any old test for evaluation, and make everyone do the same one.
NTU foreign languages professor Liao Hsian-hao said that universities should set their own assessments, but the understanding of whether students have achieved the necessary expertise for local personnel requirements still needs to be discussed.
