Following the historic constitutional ruling, the presidential office last night issued a statement on the executive branch's position. It urged relevant agencies to put forward a draft amendment to the civil code as soon as possible, and called on the Legislative Yuan to pass it into law within the two-year deadline.

The law should protect everyone's right to marriage and equal treatment. According to our constitution, the ruling today is binding on all government agencies and citizens. So we would like to call on agencies in the executive branch to widely consult opinions and swiftly propose concrete a solution. We also call on the Legislative Yuan to pass the solution into law within two years.
The statement, given by Secretary General to the President, Joseph Wu, reflects on Tsai's hope that people in Taiwan will try to understand, accept and respect different opinions. She also expresses confidence in Taiwan's democracy as well as its ability to resolve conflicting views. Meanwhile, Premier Lin Chuan echoes Tsai's statement, saying that the executive branch will soon put forward a viable solution that is based on maximum consensus and results in minimum impact.
