FIRST PUBLIC HEARING ON PENSION REFORM|年改公聽 學者籲速年改 避免影響國家財政

In the first of the two public hearings on the pension reform, which was held yesterday, a representative urged President Tsai to meet with civil servant groups in person and hear out what they have to say, but several experts stressed that reforms are necessary to prevent the bankruptcy of the pension fund. National Civil Servant Association Director Lee Lai-hsi has always been on the frontlines to fight for the rights of public servants. On Apr.26, the Legislative Yuan held a public hearing on public servant pension reform. Before the meeting started, Lee was on the verge of tears when interviewed by the media outside the Legislative Yuan. After the meeting ended, Lee said that among all speakers at the public hearing, only he and Hualien Civil Servant Association Director Wen Chun-hua were public servants. He hoped to have a direct meeting with President Tsai-Ing wen because he thought that the meeting did not fully reflect public servants' thoughts on the issue. ==LEE LAI-HSI Dir., National Civil Servant Assn.== Our dear President, could you please come out to receive us? We are willing to express our ideas to you without reservation. We hope that you can review the bill. Even if you are the president, and that your party enjoys majority of seats in the Legislative Yuan, it does not mean that you can do whatever you want. While some supported the government's pension reform plans, saying that this is the only way to prevent the pension system from going bankrupt, impacting national finance, others doubted that if it is necessary to take on pension reform in such a hurry. ==CHUNG SAN-LIN Professor, NTU Department of Finance == If the government goes bankrupt, we will become the second Greece. Do you think our country will be better in this kind of situation? Legitimate expectation cannot serve as an excuse to stop pension reform. ==LAI KUN-YU Director, Retired Police Officers Association == The pension reform should not be implemented in such a hurry. It lacks legitimacy. The Legislative Yuan will hold another public hearing on Apr.27, targeting at public school teachers. Next week, the Legislative Yuan may hold a clause-by-clause review on public servant pension reform, and pass the preliminary review.
