Taiwan's police have announced that two young Taiwanese were arrested in Indonesia in an attempt to smuggle 3.7 kilograms of amphetamine into the country, where they may face the death penalty. This comes on the heels of a high schooler caught attempting to transport drugs out of Taiwan. With illegal drugs a growing problem in schools and the military, and affecting younger age groups, the Ministry of Justice is building a drug crime database to aid in investigations and is considering proposing changes to the law to make penalties harsher for drug use. The rightmost two people in this Indonesian footage are two Taiwanese accused of drug smuggling. One is a university student. They said that they agreed to transport 3.7 kilograms of amphetamine for NT$150,000 each. Now they have been arrested in Indonesia, where they may face the death penalty. ==CHENG HUI-MING Chief, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Investigation Corps, CIB== Amphetamines were discovered attached to their legs. The transport of amphetamines is considered a major crime in Indonesia, punishable by the death penalty. This is the latest in a recent series of drug smuggling cases involving Taiwanese youth. The Taiwan High Prosecutors Office has also announced that a second crackdown on drug crimes this year, taking place over 15 days from Mar. 17 to Mar. 31, has led to the arrest of 616 drug dealers and 2,806 drug users, many of whom were minors still in school. Faced with younger and younger drug users, the Ministry of Justice is seeking to cut off the supply of drugs and establish a database of drug crimes. ==WANG TIAN-SHENG Chief Prosecutor, Taiwan High Prosecutors Office== The database will allow us to discover where drug dealing hotspots are, and we will require local prosecutors and police to take action on the hotspots. Currently, there are no criminal penalties for Schedule III and IV drugs, which are the most widely abused. The People First Party has already expressed their intention to change this, and the Ministry of Justice also said they are considering a change. ==NIEH CHUNG Head Prosecutor, Department of Prosecutorial Affairs, MOJ== The effect of punishment and education on Schedule III and IV drugs will be a consideration as we develop legislative proposals. But because many government departments will be involved, we'll collect opinions from academics and experts across the different departments before we settle on a strategy and direction. In response to the growing drug problem in the armed forces, prosecutors will also establish a reporting system to strengthen monitoring and enforcement in the military. TRANSLATED BY:JOHN CHEN
