First in this morning's international news, a bomb blast tore through a subway train in Russia's St Petersburg on Monday at about 2:20pm local time, killing 10 people and injuring about 40. It took place just as President Vladimir Putin was visiting the port city. Security has been tightened at key transport sites across the country, and efforts are now underway to round up two men suspected of involvement. One of them has been said to be 23 years of age and of Central Asian origin. The train driver chose to continue on to the next station, Technological Institute, a decision praised by the Investigative Committee as aiding evacuation efforts and reducing the danger of more deaths from passengers trying to walk along the subway's electrified tracks. ==NATALYA KIRILLOVA eyewitness== At that moment there was a huge bang. It was deafening. And I was sitting next to a metal railing and I think it saved my life. Of course everybody fell to the right. Not down to the floor, but on seats. One eyewitness said that those who had been affected by the blast had worked together to help each other survive. ==NATALYA KIRILLOVA eyewitness== When we were climbing out the train carriage collapsed, all of it. Everything went black, it started to fall apart and while we were approaching (the station)... It is good that the train did not stop, it was going on full speed. And we were lying there and I thought, oh God, just let us reach (the station). And when we were approaching it, when we could already see the lights of the station there was another explosion at the top. But it seems there was a short-circuit or something. This fire could be seen. Hours later, police found an unexploded device in one of the city's busiest subway stations, sending a another wave of fear through the city. Russia's health minister confirmed 10 people died, including two who died in intensive care at the hospital due to their injuries. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The entire St. Petersburg subway system, which serves some 2 million riders a day, was shut down and evacuated. Russia's National Anti-Terrorist Committee said security was immediately tightened at all of the country's key transport sites, including Moscow. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
