About two weeks ago, Kaohsiung was rocked by a gas explosion which killed one worker and injured many others. Some fear that the incident could be a repeat of the deadly explosions caused by gas leaks in 2014. The victim's wife said that she received no official explanation or condolence so far and accused the city government of neglecting the problem. Last month in Kaohsiung a 37 year old man was killed while working on a gas pipeline in the city. He was the only victim of the explosion, although others suffered injuries. His wife claims that the city government has not found the cause of the accident and shown no concern for the death. ==MRS. PAN widow of the victim== We don't know how this can happen just digging up something. We need an explanation, it been such a long time since it happened. On the day of the explosion, three workmen who were nearest the hole were rescued immediately, but one, surnamed Pan was stuck in the hole for three hours and died from gas inhalation. His wife wants an explanation for the explosion and wrote an open letter on Facebook, accusing the city government of total lack of concern, not even sending anyone to offer incense for the victim. == HAN JUNG-HUA Chief Engineer, WRB, Kaohsiung City Gov. == Every day we have asked our colleagues to go to the funeral altar and apologise. When the city government knew of the incident, they said that they sent officials to the family to explain the circumstances and that condolences and compensation discussion were underway. Prosecutors said the explosion was due to the pipeline being damaged by digging but initially they were unable to ascertain who the pipeline belonged to and the remains were being examined. == WANG CHI-MING Deputy Chief Prosecutor, Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office== The China Petroleum pipeline has been there for a decade or more and some local conditions have changed, so we are currently retrieving relevant plans for the pipelines at the intersection. Prosecutors emphasized that the city government had used existing plans when ordering the digging, but the plans were different from the actual situation and there were many unmarked pipelines and their locations may have been wrongly drawn. This all needed clarification and the results of the investigation would be made public when it was completed.
