Hong Kong will choose its next chief executive today. But many residents think today is actually the "selection day" rather than "election" as all the three candidates are pre-approved and China's favorite, Carrie Lam, is almost certain to win. Hundreds took to the streets to protest against Beijing's 'interference' before the election day and voiced their support for John Tsang, a former Financial Secretary, who is leading opinion polls.
==CROWD AT RALLY==
Go, John Tsang!
==JOHN TSANG Hong Kong Chief Executive Candidate==
The election day is just two days away. And this is an opportunity for us to rebuild trust, to unify our community, and to rekindle hope, especially for the young people.
On the eve of the Hong Kong Chief Executive election, popular poll leader and former Financial Secretary John Tsang toured Hong Kong Island on a double-decker bus meeting with supporters. Though the election is decided by 1200 members of an Election Committee instead of Hong Kong's 3.8 million voters, Tsang is still winning plaudits for taking his appeal to the public.
==HONG KONG RESIDENT==
I think society has been torn apart. If he can really bring together people of different parties, then society won't be so divided.
Beijing's preferred candidate is former Chief Secretary of Administration Carrie Lam. She has campaigned only through radio interviews. Though polls show that less than 30% of voters support Lam, she is widely considered the favorite.

She'll have support among the business community, who may not care that much about democracy, who care more about political stability, who care more about (the) relationship with Beijing. But the vast majority of people, I would say 60% of the people in Hong Kong, actually do care about democracy, and they demonstrated (that) through their voting patterns.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to China. Though Beijing has promised a "one country, two systems" formula, Hong Kong voters remain unable to choose their leader. Academics say that this election could deepen political rifts in the territory.
