On the final leg of his tour in East Asia, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Tillerson's trip ended with an agreement to work together with China on North Korea and to put aside trickier issues.
==WANG YI PRC Foreign Minister==
It is normal for China and the US to have different opinions and views. In our meeting, I specified China's firm stance on the issue of Taiwan, Diaoyu Islands, and the deployment of THAAD.
The two countries also have different opinions on how to solve North Korea's nuclear problem and the tension on the Korean Peninsula.
==WANG YI, PRC Foreign Minister==
We are for the settlement of this issue through dialogue and negotiations and the maintenance of peace and stability on the peninsula and the overall region.
The US stated that all options, including military, are on the table.
==REX TILLERSON US Secretary of State==
We've committed ourselves to doing everything we can to prevent any type of conflict from breaking out, and we view there are a number of steps that we can take that are in front of us.
Secretary Tillerson also stressed the need for a "results oriented" relationship with China in working together to prevent North Korea from further developing their nuclear program.
==REX TILLERSON, US Secretary of State ==
We renewed our determination to work together to convince the North Korean Government to choose a better path and a different future for its people.
Prior to Secretary Tillerson's visit to Asia, President Trump tweeted that North Korea has been playing the US for years and that China has done little to help. Meanwhile, Secretary Tillerson reiterated that the US will not give up on taking military actions against North Korea. It remains to be seen how China and North Korea will react to US moves.
