NGOS STILL CALL FOR LEGISLATIVE OVERSIGHT MECHANISM|太陽花學運三週年 民團籲兩岸監督條例速立法

Saturday was the third anniversary of the so-called sunflower student protests. More than 100 people gathered outside the Legislative Yuan yesterday, asking for swift passage of the oversight law requiring transparency and civic participation in any negotiations with China. The activists said they were "disappointed" with President Tsai Ing-wen and the DPP. Both had shown strong support for the movement while in opposition. In response, DPP spokesman Chang Chih-hao said that the party has put the articles as a priority in this legislative session. Three years ago students forced their way into the Legislative Yuan and occupied the floor for 23 days. They were protesting against the trade in services agreement, which delineated the scope of trade with China. They also demanded an oversight mechanism for any legislation dealing with China. Three years later, with the DPP in power, none of this has happened. The KMT jibed that the DPP pushed the legislature when in opposition, but now that they were in power, did nothing and were just passing the buck. Next week they will arrange for reports from relevant departments and review the issue. ==TSENG MING-TSUNG KMT Legislator== The new administration has been in power for nearly 10 months now and there has been no progress on this. The Executive Yuan designated this as priority legislation, but paradoxically, the Executive Yuan itself has not offered any legislation, so I think this was all a ruse. In response, the DPP said it had not dragged its feet on legislation and their own caucus draft version had been discussed many times with NGOs and best represented their administration's stance on the issue. ==WU SI-YAO DPP Legislator== Let's look at the past, who kept denying open and transparent oversight on the legislature? The current opposition have offered six drafts on a legislative oversight mechanism, but the Legislative Yuan itself has offered none. The DPP responded that its caucus version met public calls for mutual, open and transparent cross-strait legislation.
