March 11th marked the 6th anniversary of Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster. Yesterday, anti-nuclear groups held a protest, the first of its kind since President Tsai Ing-wen took office. They called upon the government to remove nuclear waste stored on Orchid Island and to fulfill its promise to create a "nuclear-free homeland" by 2025. Taiwan Power Company said that they have already been working on plans such as decommissioning nuclear power plants. They will carry out their plans to remove nuclear waste stored on Orchid Island. President Tsai said on her Facebook that Taiwan will be able to phase out nuclear power and achieve the goal of generating 20 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2025.
Shouting slogans, anti-nuclear protestors urged the government to meet its pledge to phase out nuclear power by 2025, and to remove nuclear waste stored on Orchid Island. Many brought their children to the protest, asking the government to face up to the hazards of nuclear waste pollution.

We are here to beat the big monster today. My mother and father told me that there is a parent-child activity here, which we have to bring our instruments.

It does not matter whether we are using nuclear energy in the future or not. Nuclear power waste stored on Orchid Island should be removed first.
Last year, President Tsai Ing-wen promised to create a nuclear-free homeland by 2025 in her presidential campaign. However, until now, Taiwan Power Company has not found a new permanent site to relocate nuclear waste. The indigenous Tao people of Orchid Island therefore came to Taipei, and staged a sit-in protest.

It has been 30 years, and there have been no progress. We fall behind the trend to stop using nuclear power.
President Tsai also proposed to develop renewable sources, increasing the amount of electricity generated by it from 4 percent to 20 percent by 2025 to get rid of nuclear power. Anti-nuclear groups hoped that the goal of a nuclear-free homeland is not just an empty promise.

We hope that the Ministry of Economic Affairs can develop good energy management and emergency response plans. We also hope that it can expedite the development of energy saving methods and renewable sources so as to working through the transition period.
Similar anti-nuclear protests were held in Kaohsiung and Taitung, asking the government to speed up the pace of making energy transition plans. Taipower said that they have already been working on plans such as decommissioning nuclear power plants. They will carry out their plans to remove nuclear waste stored on Orchid Island.
