CHINESE STUDENT SOUGHT TO RECRUIT MOFA STAFF TO SPY RING|陸生涉發展共諜組織 吸收我外交部官員 遭收押禁見

A Chinese student surnamed Zhou who came to Taiwan for graduate study is suspected of organizing a spy ring to collect classified secrets. Zhou also attempted to recruit a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official, who became suspicious and reported the incident for investigation. The suspect has been detained for questioning by prosecutors, who said there was sufficient evidence to charge him with violating the National Security Act. It is the first case in Taiwan of a Chinese student being investigated for espionage. On the evening of Mar.10, the student, surnamed Zhou, from China's Liaoning Province was arrested on suspicion of spying by the Criminal Investigation Bureau. He was sent to the Taipei District Court for questioning and the investigators applied for him to be held by the court as a flight risk. Investigators suspect that, while a student in National Chengchi University's Graduate MBA program, Zhou set up a spy ring, recruited members and engaged in gathering information. It was confirmed that Zhou graduated from NCCU, but what he did after graduation, the university did not know. ==WANG WEN-CHIEH Sec-Gen. NCCU== He entered in 2012 and in July 2016 he graduated and returned to his domicile. During his period of study, his performance was quite good. He belonged to the Communist Youth League, this is registered in the entrance application. We do not undertake any political checks. The Ministry of Justice said that after Zhou graduated, he left Taiwan. He then returned on business and the investigation obtained lengthy information that recently Zhou tried to recruit a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official. Offering a free trip as an incentive, he asked the official to go to Japan and hand over information, for which they would be paid in US dollars while outside Taiwan. Premier Lin Chuan was questioned in the Legislative Yuan about this first case of a Chinese student spy. High levels of China's Taiwan Affairs Office were concerned over the incident and responded that this was deliberately fabricated to cause trouble and the accusation was damaging to cross-straits educational exchange.
