PRESIDENT TSAI NAMES 11 NOMANEES FOR CONTROL YUAN|總統府補提名監委 國民黨批立場矛盾

On March 2, the Presidential Office on Thursday defended its short list of nominees for Control Yuan vacancies. The list sparked speculation of a shift in DPP's previous position on the Control Yuan. Vice President Chen Chien-jen said that this does not represent a change in DPP's policy to abolish the agency, and denied allegations from some Kuomintang members that the appointments were, in fact, a political reward. On March 2, the Presidential Office held a press conference to introduce the 11 nominees who will be filling vacancies in the Control Yuan. Vice President Chen Chien-jen said that the decision was made out of professional considerations. It is hoped that the Control Yuan can better exercise its power with talented people from different political parties. Former Presidential Office Secretary-General Chen Shih-meng, and former People First Party's legislator Liu Wen-hsiung were listed as nominees. ==CHEN CHIEN-JEN Vice President== During the review process, we didn't take any political reward into consideration. It has nothing to do with party affiliation. The only rule for the nominations was recruiting people based on their talents. The nominations attracted much criticism from the KMT. It pointed out that a number of Tsai's picks were involved in government scandals in the past, saying that the appointments were, in fact, a political reward. Chen Shih-meng, who proposed to abolish the Control Yuan, counterattacked. ==CHEN SHIH-MENG nominee== The reason why I expose myself in public and ask for a post in the Control Yuan is because I want to prove that I can contribute to Taiwan's judicial system. ==TIEN CHIU-CHIN nominee== My age certifies that my expertise withstands the test of time. Vice President Chen Chien-jen said that this does not represent a change in DPP's position to remove the Control Yuan through a constitutional amendment. Chen said that before the Constitution is amended, there should be competent people to exercise the Control Yuan's power. ==CHEN CHIEN-JEN Vice President== Since the 2016 presidential election, public opinion in Taiwan has changed. Therefore, the selected nominees have to reflect the newly formed public opinion. Legislative approval is required before the nominees assume their new posts. The qualification review will start within one or two months.
