The cold spell continues and 20 weather monitoring stations around Taiwan saw record-breaking low temperatures for this winter. According to statistics from local fire stations, over 40 have died from the low temperatures. The Ministry of Health and Welfare initiated a response mechanism for elderly people living alone and the homeless to give out necessities to keep warm. The MOHW has also prepared stocks of anti-virus drugs.
At Taipingshan's Scenic Recreation Area the landscape was white with frost, but as there was a lack of moisture in the air, it did not actually snow.
Out of 21 temperature monitoring stations across Taiwan, 20 broke records for low temperatures this winter.

Looking at the information, before dawn on Feb. 13, all temperatures will be very low. The cold air mass will be at its strongest from the evening of Feb. 10 to the early morning of Feb. 11.
The Central Weather Bureau reminded people that the low temperatures will continue until Monday Feb. 13. This is a dry cold air mass and there may be some sunshine during the day, but low temperatures will persist. In the center and south, there will be a large temperature difference between day and night so the public must maintain warmth. Around 40 people across Taiwan appear to have died from the cold and the Ministry of Health and Welfare initiated a response mechanism.

The emergency response center has been initiated to adjust numbers of hospital beds and anti-viral medicines. Around 3,700 doses have been prepared.
NGO's started to give out winter necessities to the homeless such as warm blankets.
This cold air mass has also brought air pollution with it. From Feb.10, the air all over Taiwan was both cold and dirty and the AQI recorded at many air quality monitoring stations was at a red warning level, unhealthy for all groups. Towards evening, the air quality gradually improved.

An area of haze in China was sucked in by the cold air mass, but this has gradually improved and the following air masses should be a bit cleaner.
The Environmental Protection Administration said over the weekend, the air should be noticeably cleaner. However, by Feb. 14, with the weakening of the cold air mass, the wind will change direction and air may not disperse well in the western half of the island so air quality will become poorer again.
