The sudden cold snap brought with it an increase in incidences of cardiovascular events and strokes. In one morning in New Taipei City 13 people were sent to hospital feeling unwell due to the cold. Doctors say that with overnight low temperatures those with chronic illnesses and the elderly, need to keep warm. The Centers for Disease Control reminds people that crowds at the weekend lantern festival are ideal for virus transmission and anyone visiting crowded places should take precautions.
The coldest spell of weather so far this winter means that most large hospitals are seeing 10 to 20 percent more patients than usual. Many of these have suffered cardiovascular and stroke events. Even young people are at risk. In Taipei City, a 45-year-old man was sent to the hospital on Feb 8 with difficulty breathing and was found to have an acute myocardial infarction. Fortunately, he had an emergency cardiac catheterization surgery and survived.

The age of patients we see with cardiac events is decreasing, especially those in the three high-risk categories, they already suffer from high blood pressure at a young age, or hyperglycemia or even diabetes,
so the average age of these vascular emergencies has seen a significant decline.
As the cold spell intensifies, in just one morning in new Taipei City a total of 13 people sought emergency hospital treatment due to the cold, in Taoyuan City two people were sent to the emergency at dawn when they were discovered to have no vital signs. In Taichung City, a 70-year-old man was sent to the hospital with a stroke. Doctors remind the public that the temperature drops significantly at night and those with chronic illness or the elderly must take special care to keep warm if they get up at night.

When temperatures drop or there is a big difference in temperatures, then those with cardiac illness may experience sudden vesicle constriction or sudden changes in blood pressure and these may lead to obstruction of blood flow.
This cold spell will last for a while and the Centers for Disease Control reminded the public that there were cluster outbreaks of viruses. Any events like the lantern festival where there were likely to be large crowds would be an ideal environment for virus transmission so the public should take precautions.
