POST OFFICE WILL CONTINUE SOME SATURDAY SERVICE|''

To comply with the new work-week policy, Chunghwa Post Co. is planning to suspend Saturday services in half of its post offices starting from late Feb. However, Minister of Transportation and Communications Hochen Tan asked the company to revise the plan as it could inconvenience the public. On hearing this, the Chunghwa Postal Workers' Union said that they may follow in the footsteps of the Taiwan Railway Labor Union and stage a protest. To comply with the "one fixed day off and one flexible rest day" policy, last year, Chunghwa Post Co. announced that over 140 of 287 post offices operating on Saturdays will stop providing services on weekends starting from late Feb. However, MOTC Minister Hochen Tan asked the Chunghwa Post Co. to review its decision, saying that it will cause inconvenience to the public. ==MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC== From the point of view of the public, I am for the MOTC Minister, because it is more convenient for all of us. However, the decision will increase workload for post staff. ==MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC== The Chunghwa Post Co. can choose to make at least some of its employees work on Saturdays to provide postal services and banking services. The Chunghwa Postal Workers' Union expressed their opposition on hearing that there may be a change to the company's plan to reduce the number of post offices providing services on Saturdays. The union said that they have come all this way to schedule shifts after negotiations with the company before and after the Lunar New Year holidays. Chunghwa Post Co. has promised to give overtime pay to those working on Saturdays according to new regulations of the Labor Standards Act. The MOTC's instruction for more post offices to operate on Saturdays completely disrupts the current plan. ==CHENG KUANG-MING Dir., Chunghwa Postal Workers' Union== Besides providing services for the public, Chunghwa Post Co. should also take the employee's health and right to rest into consideration. The MOTC's statement disrupts our schedule. I think it micromanages too much. If the MOTC insist in making us work on Saturdays, we will hold a protest, just like Taiwan Railway Labor Union did. I think this is not something that everyone will be glad to see. The union said that the company should add more personnel instead of forcing its employees to work on Saturdays. Chunghwa Post Co. said that they are now making new plans to cope with the situation, hoping to strike a balance between customer convenience and employee's health. The company aims to maintain Saturday services in a least of half of the 287 post offices currently opening on Saturdays. The final decision will be announced publicly after being sent to and approved by the MOTC. TRANSLATED BY:ARIEL HSIEH
