Fresh from his inauguration, US President Donald Trump is starting what he terms as his "America First" protectionist policies. Having declared that the US will withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, he has now said that he will re-negotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, with Canada and Mexico.

We are going to start negotiations having to do with NAFTA. Anybody ever hear of NAFTA? I ran a campaign somewhat based on NAFTA. But we're going to start renegotiating on NAFTA, on immigration, on security at the border.
Trump has made it one of the priorities of his first hundred days in office to either renegotiate or completely withdraw from NAFTA, which he blames for causing the decline of US manufacturing. In the swearing-in of his cabinet on the 22nd, he once again emphasized that new negotiations will begin soon. NAFTA was signed between the US, Canada, and Mexico during Bill Clinton's administration in 1994, creating the world's largest free trade zones. After the agreement was signed, Mexico emerged as a major manufacturer thanks to its cheap labor. In particular, the rapid development of Mexico's automobile industry has made it a major target for Trump.
Trump has lambasted multi-national automobile companies on Twitter, threatening punitive taxes on them if they do not move their manufacturing back to the US. Trump's protectionist policies have caused ripples in Japan, a major car exporter. On Monday, the yen rose against the dollar and the euro in a further blow to Japan's exports. The stock market reacted negatively, with the Nikkei index closing down 246 points.
==YOSHIHIDE SUGA Japan Chief Cabinet Secretary==
The effects of the Trump administration's policies on Japan's companies deserve close attention. We need to promote further development of our economic ties.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga says that he hopes for a meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to further strengthen Japan's alliance with the US.
