TAXI DRIVER ADMITS TO INDECENT ASSAULT OF KOREAN VISITORS|司機坦承猥褻2名韓國女子 法院裁定羈押

Two Korean women who came to Taiwan on a five day, four night visit were drugged and assaulted by a taxi driver. The 41 year old taxi driver surnamed Chan詹 admitted indecently assaulting two of three Korean women who hired his taxi, but did not admit to rape. The judge found this to be a serious offense and agreed to prosecutors' request to hold Chan in detention from Jan. 15. The taxi driver who assaulted two Korean women was deemed by the judge at Shihlin District Court to be a flight risk, or capable of tampering with evidence. As he had committed a serious crime he was detained after half an hour's questioning. ==LEE CHIH-HUA PTS reporter== The three Korean women arrived at Shihlin night market in the taxi, two of them drank drinks offered by the taxi driver, passed out and were assaulted by him. The three women on a five day, four night trip had booked the taxi service online before they arrived. At 7 pm on Jan. 12 they took the taxi to Shihlin night market. The three drank drinks proffered by the taxi driver which he had injected with drugs. Two of the women fell asleep after drinking and were driven to another location and assaulted while the other visited the market. After they returned to their hotel and regained consciousness they realized that they had been drugged and appealed for help on the Internet. ==MR. FAN== Its like India. That sort of thing is really common, so nobody wants to visit India for a holiday. This will be very bad for Taiwan tourism and affect Taiwan badly. ====MS.WANG== Now there will be very few Korean tourists who will come here. After the Korean Representative Office found out about the incident they helped the women to report to the police. Prosecutors immediately investigated and summoned the taxi driver. After investigation, the women submitted hospital reports which recorded lower body injury consistent with sexual assault. However, the taxi driver did not admit rape, only indecent assault. The Tourism Bureau estimated that 10.68 million international visitors came to Taiwan last year. The top three groups by nationality were China Japan and Hong Kong, with Korea fourth at 800,000 visitors. This was up on the previous year by 33 percent, mostly independent travelers. This incident will sadly affect Taiwan's international image.
