In other news, On Jan. 12, the head of the pension reform committee Lin Wan-yi admitted in a media intervIew that he had NOT ONLY been verbally subjected to attacks, but he had even been physically threatened. However, he still looked forward to creating a fairer and more sustainable system for future generations. Meantime, over the past few days, Vice President Chen Chian-ren, has been posting graphics on his facebook page to help clarify the pension reform process. Here's a look.
Pension reform has come to the stage of local meetings, but at each of these meetings there has been considerable conflict. On his facebook page, Pension reform committee convenor, Vice President Chen Chien-jen has graphics of six geese to explain the reform process. Before reform, the geese are sick and lay few eggs, but after reform, each can lay healthy eggs. On Jan. 12, he posted a graphic he had drawn himself, showing that pension reform is purely a matter of numbers, the object was to allow everyone to use it long-term, so that the fund was sustainable. In his interview, Lin said he wanted to solve conflict between generations.

The reason there was so much confrontation during the process of this reform is that everyone was anxious. After the actual decision, some people may feel that it had to change sooner or later.
Lin said many young military, public school teachers and civil servants criticized that those already retired took full advantage of the system although only paying the minimum into it. This was a common truth and not just maligning retirees. The reform aims to change the 18 percent interest rate for savings. High-level legal officials pronounced that the 18 percent does not contravene trust protection, but it had a certain historic background, to look after living costs. A basic living cost protection would be set and anything over this would be changed. For other workers, the length of time that wages were paid into the scheme would be adjusted. Apart from the military, the whole country should come under the same system, including civil servants, so that how much was paid in, was related to how much could be taken out.

The insurance you pay out is calculated on your wages. When you retire, if you use the highest rate of the last day or last five years, to calculate then you take out more than you have paid in. Who is losing out in this? All the young workers, that's who is losing out. That's what is happening with public school teachers and civil servants, so we hope to bring back generational justice.
Retired teacher Lin Hui-hsin excoriated Lin Wan-yi on the internet , but Lin took this with good grace, saying that when the President assigned him to take charge of pension reform he could only do his best and try to finish it this year and hope that it would not be used in local elections next year to obscure the real issues and lose space for reasoned discussion.
