HEATED DEBATE AT KAOHSIUNG PENSION REFORM HEARING|年金改革座談南部場 上萬人抗議零星衝突

Another public hearing for the pension reform was held in Kaohsiung yesterday on January 8. Over ten thousand protesters were at scene shouting slogans. To ensure that the hearing goes on smoothly, a large police presence was mobilized by the Kaohsiung City Government to maintain order. Several clashes erupted but no injury was reported. For the controversial issue of pension reform, one side is the Taiwan Radical Wings members who support the reform while the other side of protesters oppose to it. Both sides had quarrels. Police force had a hard time controlling protesters at scene. A young representative who supports the reform was chased and hit when leaving the venue. ==MR. LAI Anti-Pension Reform Supporter== This government tainted us and made stigmata attach to us. It has made many public servants think the pension reform is unreasonable. The pension reform hearing for the southern region was held in Kaohsiung. Those who are opposing to pension reform had mobilized over ten thousand protestors shouting slogans at outside of the hearing venue. ==LI LAI-HSI Nat'l Assoc. of Civil Servants Chairman== I think this government had not grasped the opportunity. It has no sincerity for negotiating with us. It has no sincerity for listening to our voices. They gave us only three minutes. What sort of long-vision pension reform can we discuss with three minutes? A majority of police force were at scene. Although some clashes occurred but no injury was reported. The city government said, the police force was to refrain violence from interfering, and guarantee representatives' rights to participate and discuss. The hearing was hosted by the minister of Civil Service and deputy minister of Labors. Protestors said, they will shadow the hearing and come back again on January 21.
