WONG WANTS MORE SOCIAL PARTICIPATION, SHARES EXPERIENCE|黃之鋒偕港議員來台座談 遭遇"反港獨"抗議

Hong Kong political reform activists, including Joshua Wong, secretary general of Demosisto and three Legco members: Eddie Chu Hoi-dick, Edward Yiu Chung-yim, and Nathan Law Kwun-chung arrived in Taiwan on Jan 8 to take part in a seminar hosted by the New Power Party. When they arrived at Taoyuan International Airport, they were heckled by members of pro-unification groups. They were again heckled in the afternoon outside the seminar. Wong said that this was a little exagerated, as he had never advocated independence for Hong Kong. A group of hecklers chanted anti-Hong Kong independence slogans and protested the presence of Hong Kong political reform activists in Taiwan. The activists came to participate in a two-day seminar hosted by the New Power Party. The police were worried about possible conflict and sent 200 officers to keep the peace. ==TSENG CHENG-HSING Vice Chair, Chinese Unionist Party== We say it again, they dare to come to Taiwan, we patriots will surely punish them. The Hong Kong activists were heckled by pro-unification groups as soon as they arrived. Due to the risk of being physically attacked, they left the airport under police protection. Later as they arrived for their seminar they were heckled again. The protestors scuffled with police. Wong referred to this in the seminar as a little exagerated, as he had never advocated Hong Kong independence. ==JOSHUA WONG Sec-Gen. Taiwan and Hong Kong are both democratic societies and we need to think about how to deepen our democracy. During the seminar both sides shared their experience on running in elections, views on policy, and the role of transformation after entering the legislature. Wong emphasized that he had never advocated independence for Hong Kong, but that in both Taiwan and Hong Kong people labelled him as such. In fact what they actually wanted was more participation in civil society and they hoped to use this opportunity for people to understand more about Hong Kong's situation.
