TAIWAN RAILWAY LABOR UNION PROTEST AGAINST LABOR SHORTAGE|一例一休衝擊 台鐵工會上街籲補人加錢

Taiwan Railway Labor Union yesterday mobilized three thousand members to protest against personnel shortage caused by the newly amended Labor Standards Act. Protesters first made their petition heard at the legislative yuan, and then moved to the Executive yuan, where they tied red ribbons at the gate of the country's top executive agency. The union stressed that if the government fails to come up with contingency plans to solve staffing problems, a partial strike will be launched on the first of January as a warning. Taiwan Railway Labor Union called upon members to gather at Taipei Main Station and protest. The Union said, the amendment of one fixed day off and one flexible rest day will have an upper limit of 46 overtime work hours. The Union anticipates a labor shortage of 2,500 people. ==CHANG WEN-CHENG, Taiwan Railway Labor Union Chairman== We will have a warning strike. If the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and the Executive Yuan were to ignore us again, that will force us to launch the fiercest protest such as lying on rails, paralyze rail transportation. However, the Taiwan Railway Administration said the hiring involves with special examination and cannot be done in short time. The Union demands the Administration for a tentative reduction on work hours and long-term hiring plan before December 31 or the Union will call for a warning strike on January 1. In addition, the Union demands for bonuses, subsidies and pension reform. ==WANG KWO-TSAI, Deputy Minister of Transportation and Communications== We're working towards that direction. However, there are some details we need to discuss with the labor union and upper authority. If the Ministry of Transportation and Communications finished up negotiations, we will submit to the Executive Yuan for an approval. (Before the end of this year?) We are trying to facilitate on handling this matter. The ministry official accepted union's petition and agreed to call for a meeting next week.
