After soy sauce packets in Natto products were found to be from nuclear disaster affected area in Japan, the Food and Drug Administration headed to the Keelung Customs to take samples from food products imported from Japan. The FDA is currently making a full inspection on Japanese food products or composite food products that come with sauce packets. The result will be announced after the three-day inspection is complete. FDA Director General Chiang Yu-mei led the inspectors to the Keelung Customs to take samples of food products imported from Japan. After soy sauce packets were found to be from one of the nuclear disaster affected areas,a full inspection on Japanese food products is being carried out. ==CHIANG YU-MEI FDA Director General== We used to leave the packets untouched. We did not check on the small packets. Starting from yesterday, all composite food products must be opened and inspected at the border. ==TUNG CHING-HSIN Section Head, FDA Keelung Harbor Office== Additives contained in sea tangle condiment must be inspected. Ramen broth will also be checked. The same also goes for Matcha powder. Pesticide and radiation inspections will be carried out. If place of origins is not indicated in sauce packets, importers will be required to submit additional documents after the border inspection. Importers are also called upon to take preventive measures to recall their products if labels are ambiguous. In Tainan so far, inspectors have found three items from the banned areas in Japan. ==LIN SHENG-CHE, Dir, Department of Health, Tainan City Government== In the absence of a Chinese label, the importer can be fined between NT$30,000 and NT$3 million. If the product is from banned area and exceeds the radiation standard, a fine between NT$60,000 and NT$200 million will be issued. The FDA samples 15% of the food products imported from Japan and will inspect and check the first batch of those imported to Taiwan for the first time. The FDA stressed again that food products from the five prefectures affected by the nuclear accident are banned in Taiwan.
